Hello! My family and I just got back from having a wonderful time in the Florida Keys for one of my best friends’ wedding. Another vacation for the scrapbook, there’s no doubt about it!
As a single girl (and an only child), I actually travel with my parents a lot. We always have a great time. And even though they aren’t quite the foodies I am, they’re almost always patient with my incessant “shopping” for the best meals on our trips. Though, I have to say, down there I wasn’t really looking for “meals” so much as desserts and
cocktails. Of course, there’s the key lime down there (here’s an example), but what I didn’t really know before I started researching for this trip is the Keys are also the place of the Rum Runner. Why? Because rum was a BIG thing down here! (“But why is the Rum gone?!?” — Pirates of the Carribean? Anyone???)
So now that I’m home and missing that little slice of paradise, I decided it’s time I figured out how to make my own Rum Runner. Though, I have to say, as per usual, I’ve tweaked it a little bit to make it sliiiiiiiightly less sweet, and in my opinion, much more delicious.
So the base of the Rum Runner is pineapple, orange, and grenadine juices (if you can seriously think of grenadine as “juice”). But because of my recent yuck factor with chemically stuff, I tried to make it more natural and more tasty (and also easier to make) by replacing the grenadine. The secret is the Dole Orange Pineapple Strawberry juice. The strawberry gives it the sweet without the crazy food coloring of the grenadine.
So here’s to a summer of paradise! Happy Cooking!
