For those of you who don’t know, I am a lawyer by day. When we were in law school, every Thursday night was “Bar Review.” Now, as a very new first year, this was a terrifying concept. The Bar Exam is probably the most miserable, difficult test I have ever faced in my entire life. So when I saw that there was a Bar Review every Thursday during school, you could understand why I thought “We seriously have to start studying for this monster now???” Well, as you might have guessed, Thursday night Bar Review was a play on words and was not, in fact, extra study time. It was a “Review” of a different bar in the city every week. Basically a time where all of us got together to blow off steam and meet and mingle. Often, these were nights where we simply drank too much, but in spite of that, I met some of my best friends from law school at Thursday Bar Review.
In that spirit, and because dating and eating is usually done out (at least at first), I’ve decided that I’m going to restart the tradition with an actual Thursday review of a different bar or restaurant every week.
I read an article recently that said sushi is the second or third date thing. I suppose that’s because fish can be touchy–not everyone likes it–and because it can sometimes be messy. But if you ask me, sushi is something to eat any time. I have liked sushi for my whole life, and when you live in Reno, Nevada, you’re lucky enough to have access to really good All-You-Can-Eat Sushi.
Sushi Pier 2 is probably my favorite go-to place here in Reno. They have a great bar, the staff is friendly and the food is almost always excellent. On top of all of that, I’m allergic to wheat and they always work with me to make sure I get to eat exactly what I want. They make things special for me so that there isn’t any breading and they keep gluten free soy sauce on hand always.
As for date quality, I’ve found it best for a double date or a friend date. It’s not a super intimate place, so if you’re going on a real promising first date where you want some serious romance, it’s probably not the place for you. The ambience is bright, bustling and boisterous. But after the first couple of dates, it’s a comfortable place to go and talk and have a good time, and eat some good food. Plus, it’s reasonably priced and the staff is nice. Though, if you go on a Friday or a Saturday night, it’s often very full so be prepared for a wait.
This is one of the few sushi places I’ve found in Reno that has an amazing full bar. They have several top shelf things, if that’s your style, and they make great martinis. They also have more beers on tap than just the basic Saporo and Bud Light, so for beer drinkers, it’s also a good choice. They also often have their own drink specials that change with the seasons which, although often very sweet, are also worth tasting.
As for the food, I’ve been going to Sushi Pier 2 for several years with family, friends and dates; and I have only ever had one piece of sushi that I didn’t like. Not only that, but when I said something about disliking it, the servers took it away, replaced it, and didn’t charge us. As far as I’m concerned, that’s a mark of a great restaurant that deserves my patronage, for dates or otherwise.
In the future, I fully plan on having pictures of the Thursday Bar Night Bars so that you can see the food and the ambience for yourselves. But for now, take my word for it and if you like good sushi and good drinks, go to Sushi pier 2!
Happy Cooking (or just Eating)!
