Usually when we’re discussing saving time it’s in relation to cooking human food. But there’s also a huge time-saving factor when we’re trying to keep our beloved pets healthy. That’s where The Farmer’s Dog comes in.
I lost my Flower to “the Big C.” (#dogcancersucks) You can read more about that here. Throughout the experience, I learned so much about our dogs’ diets and what we feed them. Honestly, it was frightening. Between the subpar ingredients, the overseas manufacturing, and the chemical cooking processes; it’s a wonder any of our pets AVOID dying of cancer. I found myself in Costco one day, walking around with a calculator, adding up the cost of making Flower’s food myself. Aside from the time factor alone, even at Costco, to feed a dog of Flower’s size with any sort of higher-quality food; would have cost me upwards of $100-$200/week. Now, I can easily spend that at Costco, but I have to say, I’ve never done it just for my dog. I’m a good dog mom, but I’d never been that good.
I went home feeling a bit defeated, mostly because I knew as a lawyer and a writer with two time-consuming jobs, I wasn’t going to have the time to consistently make Flower’s meals, and subsequently, she’d likely continue getting the poison we call “kibble,” even if erratically. I didn’t want that.
So I turned to my best friend: the internet. And I found that there are several companies who have taken on this task for you–not to mention shipping it to your door. They’re like Blue Apron or Sunbasket for dogs. I knew I had found my answer.
In researching these companies, I realized they are vastly different in ingredients, kindness to the environment, and on your wallet. But the best one I found was The Farmer’s Dog. I decided to try it, and I’ve been a client for two years with no intention of quitting.
I had estimated the time it would take me to cook all my pup’s meals every week. Not including the time to shop and evaluate nutrient balance, it probably would have been approximately two hours in the kitchen, plus whatever time to actually cook the food (most recipes have a crock pot version to make it easier). This, for me, seemed like a lot. Had I never found Farmer’s Dog, I absolutely would have done it. But when I found them, I breathed easier knowing they were probably saving me three to six hours a week!
After Flower passed, I put myself on a list for a new baby. I got Blossom six months later, and she’s been a complete joy. But in looking forward to her health, I knew I wanted to keep her as healthy as possible from the very beginning. I wanted to give her the best chance I could to live a good long life cancer-free. Not that food is everything when it comes to dog cancer, but I know it’s a LOT.
As you can see from the pictures, even from the beginning, Blossom knew what that big box on the porch meant. There were a couple of times where she actually tried to chew her way through the cardboard!
Click any of the links on the site to get a great deal on The Farmer’s Dog. The company is fantastic and the food is obviously great (I haven’t personally tried it, but I’m taking the fact that the bowl is licked sparkly clean every day as good indication… Lol.) I also take it as a great indicator that I’ve never known dog food to actually smell like real turkey.
So, here’s to The Farmer’s Dog! They work hard to save our time for us by delivering nutrient-balanced, personalized, human-grade meals straight to our doors so that our dogs can lead healthy, happy, and looooooong lives even if we aren’t spending all our “kitchen time” on them!
Happy UN-Cooking!
