I have a friend who recently told me she has a personal rule that gives her trouble at this time of year: No Pumpkin Spice Lattes until October 1st! Personally, I think she’s crazy, but I do understand her thought process: She doesn’t want to ruin the magic. The more we allow ourselves the “special” foods in our lives at un-special times, the more their special-ness is sortof eroded. But honestly, as much as I love my friend, I don’t agree with her in general on the “Pumpkin Spice” craziness. I want to eat it all the time.
That being said, I think I’ve come to a happy medium. While I won’t post the PSL recipe until October (the first week, mind you); I STILL want to consume as many other Pumpkin Spice foods as possible. So here’s my thought: Ice Cream is summer-y, Pumpkin Spice is amazing. Put them together and we have one AH-mazing September-allowed, Pumpkin Spice treat that’s semi-approved by my anti-gun-jumping friend. Hahaha. (Ok, maybe not, but luckily she’s amazing enough that she overlooks my shortcomings.)
Bottom line is, I love Pumpkin Spice Ice Cream, but they really don’t sell it in the stores until October (perhaps those grumpy stores have the same thought process as my friend). So the best way to get the stuff in September is 1) to search high and low for those stores who may supply the stuff early; or 2) make it yourself. I prefer to go with the second option.
Since I don’t have the wherewithal to create my own ice cream recipes as yet, this one’s from the “Ice Cream Bible.” This book is epic. The link for buying the book on Amazon is below. It’s a wonderful addition to a cookbook library. And what would an ice cream recipe book be without a great and modern ice cream maker? The second link is for the newest version of the maker I currently use. One note of caution, if you use your freezer like I do (i.e., a LOT), don’t keep the bowl in the freezer until you need to use it. It can develop a smell that will effect your ice cream. No bueno.
So Happy Autumn! ENJOY the pre-Pumpkin Spice season. Soak the Fall-ness in as well as you can.
And Happy Cooking!
